Best time to visit Skardu
A shorter season than Hunza, and shorter still for Deosai and the Baltoro. Month by month, with what is shut when.
We've watched people arrive with Deosai written into the itinerary and the plateau still shut under snow, which isn't a conversation anyone enjoys having at breakfast. Skardu's season is shorter than Hunza's, and the windows that matter inside it, Deosai and the Baltoro, are shorter still. Get this wrong and the trip doesn't recover.
April and early May — thin
The valley is open and the cold desert is at its best, with low light and nobody else on the dunes. Everything else is shut. Deosai hasn't opened, the treks haven't started, and much of the tourist-facing accommodation hasn't bothered to unlock the door yet. Come now for a quiet look at the town. Don't come now with a plan that depends on anything.
Late May and June — the season starts
Green arrives. Shigar and Khaplu turn comfortable, the operators start moving groups, and Deosai typically opens towards the end of this window. Typically. Ask in the bazaar rather than trusting a date you read in April, because the snow doesn't read websites.
July and August — everything, including the treks
The only period when the Baltoro treks reliably run, and the only reliable window for Deosai. It's also when the weather treats the flight best, which matters more here than anywhere else in the country: read Skardu and Gilgit flights before you build a plan on one. The trade is company. This is when everybody else comes too, and the good rooms go to whoever asked first.
September — the quiet best
The treks wind down, the crowds thin out, and the air goes properly clear, which is when the Karakoram looks the way you hoped it would. If you're not trekking, come now. It's the month we keep going back for.
October onwards — closing
Deosai shuts, the high routes go and the town gets itself back. Winter Skardu is a real thing and a striking one, but it's a specialist trip. Ask about heating before you book any property, then ask what happens to the heating when the power goes, because it will.
