Which hotels you can actually book online
Much of the north's accommodation sits on no booking platform at all. What that means for planning, and how to work around it.
Search for a hotel in Hunza or Skardu and a booking platform hands you a list. What it won't tell you is how much of the accommodation in those valleys never appears on that list at all.
A substantial share of the registered northern stock is on no online platform anywhere. And those aren't the leftovers. Several of the best-regarded properties in Gilgit-Baltistan are among them. They run on phone calls, WhatsApp and people turning up at the door, and they have never needed anything else.
The clearest example
The single most recognisable resort in northern Pakistan cannot be booked online with a card. It sits on the lake everyone photographs, it has been operating for decades, and the booking flow is a phone call.
We list it anyway, in where to stay in Skardu. Leaving it out to keep a tidy list of bookable properties would misrepresent what is actually in that valley. That's the principle the whole site runs on: naming the best option even when we can't send you to it is what makes the ones we can send you to worth trusting.
What this means for how you plan
Don't mistake the booking platform for the market. If a valley looks like it has six hotels, it has a good many more.
Book the first night, improvise the rest. In July and August in Karimabad or Naran that advice inverts. Book ahead, and earlier than feels necessary.
Get a Pakistani phone number early. Nearly every off-platform booking runs through a call or a WhatsApp message, and both are far easier with a local number.
Expect card payment to be the exception. Deposit and then cash is the normal arrangement once you step outside the platform-listed properties.
