What a Pakistan trip costs

Dated price bands by region, and by whether you're quoted foreign or domestic rates. The national averages you'll find are worthless.

Ask what Pakistan costs and you'll get answers that disagree by a factor of three. Some of that is genuine spread. Most of it is that the aggregator sites can't tell Lahore from Skardu and average the two together, and those two places sit further apart on price than most whole countries do internally. The average describes nowhere.

So every figure here is a band rather than a number. Each one carries the date we collected it, each is split by region, and each is split again by whether you're being quoted foreign or domestic rates. The table is the page. What follows is how to read it.

Read the foreign and domestic split carefully

This isn't a rounding difference. Hand the same trip to a Pakistani visitor and to a foreign one and you can get back two quotes that look like different products, and on transport, guiding and organised trips the gap opens widest. Publishing one number for both wouldn't be imprecise. It would be wrong.

We've given it a page of its own: foreign versus domestic tour pricing.

What drives the total

Transport, more than accommodation. A jeep day in Gilgit-Baltistan can cost more than a mid-range room night, comfortably. And the northern itineraries that read beautifully on paper are exactly the ones stuffed with jeep days. Economise here before you economise on the room. Better still, base yourself somewhere you can walk out of, which is the practical case for Karimabad in where to stay in Hunza.

Whether you're trekking. A trek is a different kind of trip and a different kind of bill: porters, permits, an operator, weeks of food carried in on somebody's back. It doesn't sit on the same scale as independent travel and it shouldn't be budgeted as though it does. See tours and treks.

Season. Room rates in the north move with the season, and the bands below are in-season figures. Off-season you'll pay less and find much of it shut.

What we are not doing

We don't put a live price next to a booking link anywhere on this site. Prices move, caches go stale, and a stale price beside a booking button is both a way to lose your trust and a breach of most partner terms. Where a link goes to a booking site it tells you to check current prices. It means it.
