Best time to visit Hunza
Blossom in April, crowds in July and August, gold poplars in late October. What is open when you arrive, and what has shut.
You can get in during any month of the year. The valley sits lower than Skardu and the road in holds through winter, which gives Hunza a longer usable season than anywhere else up here. So the question isn't really whether you can go. It's what you'll find open when you arrive.
April — blossom
Apricot and cherry blossom right through the valley, and the reason a certain kind of photographer keeps coming back. It's still cold. The upper valley is barely awake, Babusar is shut solid, and you'll be doing the full length of the KKH to get in.
May and June — the opening up
Green returns, the Gojal villages upstream become properly worth the drive, and Babusar and Khunjerab begin to open. If you made us choose, we'd choose here. The season is running and the crowds haven't landed yet.
July and August — peak, and busy
Everything's open, Babusar included, and that takes a serious bite out of the drive from Islamabad. It's also the domestic holiday season, and Karimabad fills right up. Book your room in advance. Expect the busiest roads described anywhere on this site, and expect to be sharing the sunrise viewpoint with a coachload.
September and October — the best light
The crowds thin out, the dust drops out of the air, and by late October the poplars turn and the whole valley goes gold. Against that, the upper passes start closing and the nights get seriously cold. Pick one month blind and pick early October.
November to March — possible, not comfortable
The road stays open and life in the valley carries on without you, but most places that exist for tourists close, and the ones still trading may not be heated. Ask about heating before you pay for anything, then ask again. This is a season for people who came specifically for winter, and a poor introduction for anyone else.
